Why is work ethic so much more vital to have than intelligence?

I simply do not get it. Please give me your opinions.

You can be intelligent but not do anything with your smarts. But on the other hand if you have a strong work ethic that means that you are doing your job everyday, and generally employers like people who do their jobs, even if they do not have the top intelligence. :)
