I just saw the movie and was kinda interested in where this movie was going it was very very vague. well thanx for your responses

Dead from the beginning. When the mother wakes up with her child missing she's already dead. Most likely to a car crash. They are in purgatory thoughout the entire movie and never leave.

Yes, they are, but it is hard to tell, because we don't even know how they dies in the first place. The only reason I know that they are dead is because if you think about the cop you know that she would have to be dead from the motorcycle crash she went through. She has a helmet on and she was still bleeding from the head. Just a thought, though. Another clue is that Rose says that all the people of Silent Hill are dead because of the fire they had caused.

Nobody in the movie was dead while in the world of Silent Hill, theyre in limbo. A limbo that the burned up girl created with the devil. Then within that world people die, when they get killed by the monsters. So the girl and mom never got out of that world and just got stuck in limbo forever.

Interesting question. Okay some say yes, some say no, then where does the female cop fit in, was she alive or dead when she entered the town behind mother and daughter. Sorry for not answering your question, but your question got different confusing answers. I guess that's the way people perceived the movie, I'm still just confused about it.

the daughter is taken over by the "other" part of Alessa that can control the Real silent hill (not the one the cops and her husband go through) obviously the demon alessa doesnt take them back so they return to her home still in the other world
so no they are not dead

My interpretation of it was that they were trapped in an alternate reality...the same alternate reality that the hellish Silent Hill is in. If you notice, Silent Hill is just abandoned for the husband and police officer. No people, no monsters, no nothing. It's just the Devil screwing them over...

the cop died in the bike accident. You see the bike and the gaurd rail later on at the end. the mom gets stabbed through the heart and does not die she must already be dead or pergatory if you want to call it that. maybe a sequel who knows
