According to rasmussenreports.com, "The number of Americans calling themselves Republican has fallen to its lowest level in more than two-and-a-half years. Just 31.9% of American adults now say they're affiliated with the GOP. That's down from 37.2% in October 2004"

At the same time, "The number of Democrats has grown slightly, from 36.1% at the beginning of the year to 37.3% now."

Most interestingly, though, is that "those who claim to be unaffiliated have increased to 30.8% this month. That's the highest total recorded since Rasmussen Reports began releasing this data in January 2004."

So - will many of these unaffiliated voters throw their support behind one of the "Big Two" come November, or will they support alternative parties? If so, which ones and why?

Great question.

I hope people are shifting away from the total control of the two party system. To tell you the truth they are run by criminals.

I have always like the Libertarian party. I think they reflect the views of a majority of Americans. The problem is that the stranglehold on American politics may be to tight to ever have a really viable third party.

None the less I will always vote third party.....always have.

george washington said the worst thing that could happen to america is to fall into the trap of a two party system.. and he was the first and pretty wise... he was right with his foresight.. and we all see it.. we need 4-5 maybe even more voices than that in congress..
if i support a 3rd party it would be the constitution party.. because i beleive in what they stand for.. with exception of the war in iraq..

The problem with multiple parties is that they lead to coalition politics and that is a mess. Look at countries like Israel and Italy. If you thought American politics were crazy....
