The other day I found a dead rat lying in my backyard on a concrete step. It was next to the basement door which is not underground. There have been a number of rodents digging around this area. There is a tunnel going under the house, and somthing dug under the door. one neighbor has horses and the other feeds the birds by throwing seed on the ground.
What may have killed the rat? It was intact and I didn't see any wounds
What can I do about the rodents?

Impossible to know with ought an autopsy.I find them dead sometimes.
A good safe rat poison is a mixture of 50/50 corn meal and Portland cement.Otherwise use poisons so pets will not get to them.

Rat poison makes rats thirsty, they go outside to find water and die.

It could be killed by a cat and brought to the door step. Cats will bring their kills to people they like as a way of offering food for them. It sounds gross, but you have to think like a cat.
