To determine the value of a variable you need to isolate it.

Actually Arithmetic is a special case of Algebra.
The operations performed in Algebra are the same as for Arithmetic. Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and division. Plus raising to a power, taking roots etc.
If Algebra were to be taught in grade school instead of Arithmetic, it would be much easier to progress through school.
For instance, Squaring any number ending in Five.
35 X 35 = 1225 Right! Take five off one number and add it to the other. Then add 25.
30 X 40 = 1200 Now add 25 and you have 1225.
It is easy to do in your head. 3 X 4 = 12 plus the two zeros makes it 1200 Now just add 25.
See!

I don't know what you mean by "types" of algebra.
For me the most basic rule of algebra is: You can do any (basic) operation you want to an equation, as long as you do the same thing to both sides.

There are many branches of algebrasa, school algebra, linear algebra, space algebra and vector algebr. they are all different but the main basics things in algebra is the system it study, its construction the rules the basic concepts of the system, the relation between these concepts and the properties, the theorems and the facts about this system, your question is more difficult than its appearance.

The most basic thing in algebra is a group. A group is a set, closed under under a binary operation, that is associative, has an identity, and where every element of the set has an inverse.

Before we begin, capital X means multiply
x is just a variable
x + x = 2x
x X x = x^2 (x squared)
x + 2 = x + 2 (you can't add unlike terms)
x^2 + x = x^2 +x (you can't add unlike terms)
x + y = x + y
x X y = xy
linear means line
you need two points in a plane to make a line, and to find the slope of that line
the "plane" looks like a big cross with numbers going up and down it, and side to side. The up and down (vertical) line is the "y" axis, the side to side (horizontal) line is the "x" axis
There is right around a million different algebra terms that I didn't mention. You'll learn them in school.

The x and y, the Cartesian coordinate system, the constant and the variable... Those are just the basic things in algebra.

ORDINARY differential equations

Covariant tensors of the FIRST rank
Just kidding.
Algebra is the math about polynomials. The basic idea is that every polynomial has as many roots (some of them might be complex numbers) as the degree of the polynomial expression. The degree of the expression is equal to the greatest exponent on the independent variable.
