They are the hardened secretion of mollusks such as snails, bivalves (clams, muscles etc) and even Nautulluses (i know i didnt spell it right but its like a squid in a shell). It is for the animal's protection and when the animal dies it leaves behind a shell.

Sally....don't you remember? Sally sold sea shells by the sea shore! So if she was selling them, she probably made them!

The Keebler Elves don't make them? Then my next guess would be Mermaids. The plain truth is that the creatures somehow secreet
"stuff" that turns into "presto" shells. I guess kinda like our fingernails or teeth. Good question!~

they are like the skeletons of organisms. i believe they are from the phylum mollusca. when they die their shells(skeleton is left behind). Im not sure if other phylum have shells, but i know molluscs do.

sea snails I suppose and they are made out of calcium I believe.
