An element is a distinct chemical subtance determined by the number of protons in each atom. Every substance that has 6 protons in the nucleus of its atom is the element called carbon. Every substance that has 8 protons is called oxygen.
There are two major different forms of carbon. The first, called carbon 12 is the normal carbon. It has 6 protons. The second, called carbon 14, is what is called an isotope. But it also has 6 protons. The difference is that C12 has 6 protons and 6 neutrons, while C14 has 6 protons and 8 neutrons. An element's atomic number is calculated by adding its number of protons and neutrons. C12 -- 6+6=12. C14 -- 6+8=14. Both forms of carbon react exactly the same way when they meet another atom. So, you will find C12 and C14 in every twig of every tree in the world.
Carbon does not like to have 14 protons, so they keep breaking off and the atom changes back to C!2. When a tree dies, it stops bringing in more carbon from the air. Scientists know how fast the C14 changes to C12. By measuring the amount of C14 left in an old dead twig, like one they might find in some cave man's fire pit, they can tell how many years ago the fire was made.
Wow! Isn't science just too neat?

An element is what makes up the entire universe. There are natural elements that you can find on a "Periodic Table" along with man made elements. An element is an Atom and it goes from the lightest element to the heaviest which is Uranium.
The place on the periodic table depends upon how many orbital Electrons it has. Combinations of elements make up Molecules which in turn make up everything. Water is made up of the Hydrogen and oxygen H2o which means it has two Atoms of Hydrogen
and one Atom of Oxygen. All Matter is made up of Molecules which is the lowest number of atoms that it can have and still be that substance.

An element is a substance made up of one kind of atom only, a substance that cannot be chemically broken down into other substances.
All matter is made up from these elements, each element is formed of atoms with the same number of protons in the nucleus. Each element has its own attributes.

they a pure substances that cannot be broken down into substances different from itself by ordinary chemical processes.
examples: H - hydrogen, C - carbon, Au - gold, Cu - copper. take a look at the periodic table in a chemistry book.
