The defense was inconsistant at times, and Team USA basically dropped the entire third quarter in the game against Greece because of their poor team defense. Also, I don't think the scouting of Greece was what it could have been, or else some of the mistakes that were made could have been avoided, such as fouling the one Greek player while he was attempting a three point shot, when he wasn't a good 3-point shooter. The other teams knew all albout the US players, but the US players didn't know enough about the other teams, and that hurt them.
The prevelance of zone defense in international ball hurt. Some of the USA players didn't play any college ball, so they don't have much experience playing against the zone.
They should do better for the Olympic qualifying games, once they've had more time to play together and learn how to play the international game better.

While answering another question (on Greece scoring 101 points), I did some web research on FIBA basketball and world opinion.
I have concluded that, even with the new emphasis by USA basketball toward international competition, USA basketball fans (of which I am one) have little knowledge of the "rest of the world"'s enthusiasm for international basketball competition.
The USA fans can say all they want about it "not being that important"; but to the "rest of the world", it is - and the sport which we "invented", we are no longer dominant! We are still a major player. But, we can not expect to win until we (players and fans) believe that it is very important to win, not just a silly competition.

The simple fact of the matter is that in this tournament, Spain was the best team. And the best team won. The americans don't play team ball. In the NBA you can get away with slam dunks and missed layups and poor defense, because all teams do it! When you play internationally now, you will lose playing that kind of ball. When was the last tournament you won, america? That should be a hint!
Spain was the superior team all throughout the tournament, and won despite their best NBA player out of the line-up! Viva Espana!

first off, greece outplayed the us by a million. they did outstanding. the us looked pathetic. yes, greece may have loss to spain but it doesnt undermine the fact that they crushed the us. they were overconfident going into the game thinking they would crush the competition, they definietly were not expecting an upset like that.

The analysis in our local paper suggested that we put forth a bad strategy against Greece, going with a small lineup, when a larger lineup would've worked better. That makes more sense than anything I've heard, because you know it ain't from lack of talent. Never heard of anybody on the Greek team - I don't think any of them play in the NBA.
