I just bought a new necklace. It is made of leather string and a pendant. The leather, however, smells awful. How can I get rid of the smell without harming the necklace?

First of all, never ever, moisten it by any liquid: water, sweet, etc., except for the case your are cleaning it:
a. If the leather is nobok (sort of velvet), the smell will go away with time (unless you damp it, of course).
b. If leather is any other sort, you need to 'substitute' the tanning chemicals in the leather by rubbing a little amount of vaseline and put it in the sun light (not for a long period, it may dehidrate and will be worst). Do this once every 3 or 4 days, eventually the smell will dissapear.

...One more thing: if you store leather in a small close place (a jewlery box) you will never get rid of smell, you need to hang it somewhere in the room (this apply to any leather).
