The Dutch played a minor but significant role as the second nation to recognise American independance. They were mostly interested in shifting American trade from England to Holland and agitated against British restrictions on trade with the colonies even before the war. They did go to war against Britain, fighting in India, where they eventually lost and were forced to give over their Indian possesions to England. They were also the major source of foreign funds for America, both during the Revolution and for some time afterwards.
