I say it IS, if you want it to be. But the terms sport needs to be defined better. You can make ANYT thing into a sport. Farting is a sport to some. Eating Hotdogs is a sport to some. Poker, belching, dog shows....if you like it, spend time doing it, you can call it YOUR sport. All those who argue are really just being snobs.
There is no goal {score} in regular cheerleading. But competative cheering does. Plus, look at the olympics: gymnasts and figureskaters are considered to be sports by some, so why NOT cheerleading.

Definition of sport: Sport is a physical activity involving large muscle groups, requiring strategic methods, physical training and mental preparation and whose outcome is determined, within a rules framework, by skill, not chance.
Cheerleading is considered a sport by scholars and schools, but not by many people. Cheerleaders DO indeed work hard, those flips and cartwheels, pyramids and jumps take more flexibility, endurance, and strength then running around with a football in your hands and tackling people. It is one of the hardest sports out there. However, unfortunately for those who train hard to do this type of stuff, there are the cheerleaders who join just for popularity and stand there wearing a mini skirt and screaming and waving pom-poms and don't do anything that takes any physical ability. It is people like these that put such a taboo on cheerleading.
If you are one of those who actually try hard and do all the acrobatic stunts and joined because you wanted to and not some ploy to become popular and such, I commend you.

YES CHEERLEADING IS A SPORT.
It bugs the crap out of me when people say it isn't!! People don't know how many hours of hard work we put into it, with all those stunts and that stress!!! I am so PISSED because our school cut sideline cheer!! Because our dumb athletic director man didn't think it was a sport!! Without cheerleaders, the only support our football teams got are the fans who actually cheer. Which is minimal. So no matter what anybody else says, IT IS A SPORT. And we work just as hard as any other sports team.

Cheerleading is a sport. It is gymanstics and dance and peppiness. Seriously, it takes hard work and dedication just like the kids that are involved in any activites. So most of the time they are not given scores on their performance, but they do have competitions and they are given scholarships. Cheerleading is a sport and can be a very dangerous one. I love to watch a squad that really can perform together, it is amazing some of the things those kids do.

I understand that cheerleaders do all kinds of flips, jumps, kicks, and all sorts of movements, so I would definitely consider them athletes. But as for cheerleading being considered a sport, I'd say no. Also, cheerleading in and of itself doesn't involve a scoring system of any kind, so no.
*edit*
I'm not entirely sure cheerleaders work as hard as football players either. Football players are constantly either lifting weights, running, hitting other people, or being pummeled themselves. You have to be able to take a lot of punishment to play the game, and it takes a lot of work.

Mom always said "It's all fun and games until someone pokes an eye out! Then it's a sport!" It is quite possible to have an eye related injury in cheerleading, so you might consider it a sport!

I consider it a sport, definitely! I've never tried it but it looks like hard work! I think that anybody who says it is easy and that it's not a sport should try it. They'd change their mind awfully fast.

It is my opinion that cheerleaders are nothing more than glorified dancers. If dancing isn't a sport, neither is cheerleading.
