The best way to find out is to watch it with a bunch of friends who will explain it to you.
A description here would not to the game or the event of watching it justice.

It isn't the sort of thing to wrap one's life around -unless one is a professional player - then it's an income, a job. The adulation of fans seems to appeal to the players too, but it is just a game. Here in the US, it's also a commercial venture and considerable amounts of money are generated and exchanged as a result of the activities of professional teams.
Will the world end without American football? Of course not. Is it something everyone should pursue? No, it isn't. Is it enjoyable spectator sport? Well, yes, for millions of fans, it is. When one is young and fit, it is also an enjoyable game to participate in. Have you a favorite sport? Whatever is good about it? Answer that and you'll know why American football is so popular here.

I started going to games in High School and at that time enjoyed the team spirit and school spirit it invoked. Since then I have gotten to know the game pretty well. It is a very intriguing mix of brute force and strategy. I like seeing the creative plays and seeing a quarterback like Peyton Manning thinking on his feet, scoping out his receivers and shifting a play from one thing to another. When it works, it is thrilling. On the defense, I enjoy seeing players interrupting that thinking, predicting what the quarterback or the runner will do and moving in to prevent it.
I know that people who are from countries that concentrate on Soccer feel that it is a slower game, but since I did not grow up understanding Soccer, I am just as puzzled about what people see in it as they are about American Football.

Football is the ultimate team sport. In order for any given play to be succesful all eleven people on the team have to follow specific assignments. It is a great blend of extreme athleticism and tactful planning and strategy.

Is your question referring to playing or watching? Well, like any sport, once you have learned the rules, it can be fun to either play or watch, depending on your stance. Given the right matchup, it can have many exciting moments. It all depends on your point of view going into it, though. If you have already made up your mind that football is dumb, then you're not going to like it either way. (Note: were you referring to American football, or European football?)

OMG Football is awesome! Maybe a reason why it is awesome is because those guys are out there playing as hard as they can, after all those hours of practice and hard work. It's a fun sport to watch. Not to mention hott guys wearing tight pants...thats a plus for us girls.

It's the only sport I know that's so great to watch that a team can suck for 20 years in a row, and still sell out every home game.

The fact that you ask this question leads me to believe no matter what I tell you, you still won't like football. So, why bother?
