My 8 month old daughter was actively using some signs to communicate with me. In the last few days, she has reverted to whining instead of using her signs. We do not give into her when she does this, and she eventually forgets. The next time we prompt her for the sign, she again, whines and doesn't use it.

We are not giving into the whining. What I would like to know is this: has anyone else experienced something similar, where your baby is skilled at something for months, then simply refuses to do it, when you know she/he can and understands what you want?

Thanks :)

Let me revise...She only knows one sign, "more" and has been doing it since she was 6 months. I think she thinks it means "food." She usually does the sign when she is hungry. I know it is early for her to have mastered this sign, but she has. A few days ago, she just stopped using it and is whining in it's place. It has just thrown us for a loop!

Consider baby a brand new computer, she has some onboard (bundled) programs, but she is as new at using them as you are at stimulating them.

Dont read too much into this temporary regression, she may mean something entirely different when she makes this sign and has become frustrated because others fail to understand.

This is how communication starts.

Sounds pretty normal to me.

All babies regress it's natural. Give her what she wants but show her the sign again. She is only 8mo and her brain is far from being developed enough to remember a lot of different signs. Be patient with her you may be giving her too much too soon. She will need to be reminded of a lot of things a long the way. My peds doc said as a baby learns something new they may temporarily for get others.

All 3 of my children have been using sign since 6 months and as a sign language instructor I will inform you this is normal. Just keep using as many signs as you know or use a book to expand your sign usage. Eventually your baby will start to destinguish the signs and use them herself. Please remember that when you show your baby the sign also verbally say what it is so she can put 2 and 2 together.

Most likely she's testing her boundaries and trying something new. Perhaps she's seen this work for another little one. Or she may be getting a desire to speak, sometimes they'll quit one thing while learning another. As long as you see no "reason" for this change, I can't think of any, stick to it like usual. It will help prepare you for the tantrum stage lol. Good luck

At 8 months your baby has been doing sign language "for months"???

From what I have heard, babies BEGIN doing sign language at 8 months... even if you've been doing it since they were born....

anywho, shes 8 months old for christ sakes! She isn't a genius quite yet. Stop forcing it on her.
