Not very many serious answers here. "Grinning like an idiot?"
I don't think intelligence has anything to do with it, or maybe some. But well-rounded knowledge is bound to make anyone sad. It is a pretty sad world, yes?

Is there anyone you can trust? How many people can you simply believe? Why is it we must hide who we are? It is no wonder our spirit becomes sick.

Yes, you can choose to be happy; attitude is very important. But it doesn't work for some things.

An experiment: put a big frown on your face. Frown as hard as you can and hold it there. Really wrinkle your face into an ugly frown. Walk around with it a little. Get up, move around the room with the frown holding there on your face. Put some real work into it. Just do it.

Now, you've come back. How did that make you feel? Pretty depressing, huh? It felt awful. Did anyone see you with that frown? I'll bet it made them feel awful also.

Now, the other half of the experiment. Put a big happy smile on your face. Just grin ear to ear and hold it there. Walk around with it, experience it.

How did that make you feel? Could you possibly feel sad with that silly smile plastered on your face? And the smile, like the frown, is also contagious to others. Happiness is catching.

So happiness and sadness is also connected to other people, yes? In fact, most of our happiness and sadness is because of or connected with our relationships with other people.

As long as you are connected to other people, there is no way to control your happiness or sadness. You cannot control someone else. They will end up hating you if you succeed.

Or is your problem related to someone controlling you, or rather, you allowing them to control you?

I've answered your other question here also, and directed you to my website. There is also a Article there titled "Happiness." Please read that article. Below is a direct link. But please read the other two articles first ("Essay," and "Finding Truth"). Without truth, or understanding truth or knowing where truth comes from, or the difference in knowing and understanding, you will get ahead of yourself and not fully comprehend.

You must step out of the fast lane that life and the new society has made for you, of instant gratification by flippling a switch or taking a pill, and slow down and begin to study the problems facing you in order to understand. You must understand your purpose and meaning in life in order to experience the fullness of joy and happiness that this life offeres.

There is no one "answer." There is no switch. There is no pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. You cannot simply decide to be happy any more than you can decide to be rich. It takes some action from you.

Read the Articles suggested, and you will begin. Again.

I suppose you could through hypnosis and mental conditioning, but there will come a point where you or someone close to you would want to take your life.

Feeling bad some of time is a small price to pay in that respect, because when it passes you should feel happier than usual.

Who would want to? Without the valleys, how can you appreciate the peaks? I guess that's what some of the antidepressants are going for, but you just end up on one constant, foggy plateau.

The only people who are always happy are stupid. Hence the saying: "Grinning like an idiot."

The more intelligent one is, usually, the more pissed off one is.
