how come when white people dress casually, they still look so put together and they can easily acheive the whole "messy" look, but when people of colour do it, they look poor and not put together very well..
does anyone agree or make sense of that??

P.S- IM NOT *****HATING***** ON ANYONE SO DONT BLAME ME.

I actually don't see that at all. I suppose that is just your opinion.

i agree with the previous post 100%. first of all

>IM NOT *****HATING***** ON ANYONE SO DONT BLAME ME

first, blame you for what an opinion? no one can place blame against an opinion. Shheeesh. embarrassment.

second, black people do tend to be over the top sometimes but white people on the same hand can be under the top. as she said the whole messy look is rooted in conservatism.
it's all a matter of taste.

and by the way taste a sample of critical thinking courses, use the word "blame" appropriately, and undo your capslock on your keyboard. i'll take grammatical errors because i make them, but reasoning errors are unacceptable. a=b,b=c, therefore a=j. unacceptable.

I hate that statement I'm not a racist but! it so how justified your statement. Again read what your wrote there. How come when white people dress casually they still look so put together. Then you go on to make the racist remark. So your are racist be honest to yourself here.

I think different cultures/races have a different version of messy casual. Say you dress preppy, doesn't matter what color you are, torn up jeans and a polo scream ambercrombie. Say that you dress thug. Well, take away the gold chains and the expensive Sean John, and well, you look like a thug.

Just think that it isn't what color you are, it's how you present yourself.

I think I know what you mean here.
I have seen that to.
But the thing is I have also seen white people who I know are not trash look like white trash dressing that way.
So I think it might be that some people just have more money for lesser looking clothes or just do not live in a place where there is real poverty.

it all depends on the style of clothes they are wearing, and your perspective of those brands. some people like rocawear and fubu, some dont. some like american eagle and abercrombie, and some dont. its all about perspective. the thing you failed to look for (and what makes this a racist statement rather than a valid question) is that you dont compare two people of different descents, wearing the same brands of clothes. you mentioned white people dressing casually and pulling off the "messy" look, and then you called people of color messy trying to look "casual" thanks for the racism! (sarcasm)

i think u need to see a wider viarity of people dressing poorly vs. a messy style. a white t shirt with holes in it and dirty jeans that sag to the knees looks bad on anyone. but a nice fitted pair of bleach washed jeans and a vintage jean jacket paired with a nice graphic tee, also looks good on anybody and achives ur so called "messy look"

YOU RACIST PIG!! Just kidding. I don't know. Perhaps you just haven't seen or noticed people of color that don't look poor and not well put together. I've seen plenty of black, Asian, Arab, etc people who look pretty sharp and often more so than a lot of white people.

I don't think this question is racist at all. The issue here is a cultural variance rather than a racial difference. Your observation is based on two cultural definitions of, "Casual dress".

White people (I'm assuming of european, anglo decent), would most likely consider dress to consist of a long elegant dress for females and a suit and tie for the males. But, for a more casual look you'd probably see the same people wearing something that would probably be considered preppy. This preppy look might be very similar to that of the dressier dress. The females might still wear a dress but possibly shorter in length with a less elegant pattern. The men most likely would be wearing a polo style shirt or the same shirt that would be worn with a suit, but without the suit and tie along with rolled up sleeves and several buttons unbuttoned at the collar. As far as paints, they would probably wear dress slacks made of cotton and possibly more pleats to give a more relaxed fit.

People of colour (I'm assuming of african decent), would most likely consider dress to also consist of a long elegant dress for females and also a suit and tie for the males. But, for a more casual look you'd probably see this second group wearing items that have more of an urban, hip-hop influence. You also might see more of a GQ type of influence with more color and bolder patterns . This look is usually much farther towards the casual side of dress than that of the compared dressier dress. The females might still wear a dress but possibly shorter in length with brighter colours and bolder patterns, along with a more reveiling neckline. The men could likely would be wearing a oversized style shirt with additional pockets and maybe a designers signature boldly printed in plain sight. As far as paints, they would probably also be oversized and of a cargo styled in less than conservitive patterns and colours. Materials vary, but a materials that have a high-sheen fabic look are very popular.

The examples listed are just that, possible examples. Basically to sum it all up, most cultures consider, "Dress" style clothing to be that of European conservative origins. The standard suit, slacks and tie look hasn't changed much in hundreds of years.

The Whites (european, anglo decent), in my observation, tend to keep their personal dress codes closer to that of the old European conservitive styling, usually more of a fitted look. While people of colour are more likely to venture out of such conservitive styles, with brightly colored suits and t-shirts with sequins and bright colors. Baggy, oversized paints worn with a suit and a collar-less shirt.

Just because certain groups tend to venture farther outside of what most of us consider, "the norm" doesn't mean one style is is dressier than that of the other. It just means that your personal preference is obviousley that of the European conservitive styling. With that being said, we now know why you feel that people of colour appear to dress as if they, "were poor or not put together well."

Just to those of you (race card junkies) who might think that there's some underlying racist remarks in this reply or in that of the original post, we must ask the poster this: If the clothing (from both sides) that you spoke of were to be traded between the two racial groups, would the whites than appear, "poor or not put together well?"

I hope my post helped answer your question, as well as made various readers realize that people that point out cultural differences, are by no means racist.

P.S.: Jeff, the spelling "colour" is the European spelling for "color".
P.S.: Baby, how about all of us just being proud to be known as, "Americans". None of our familys started here. We all came from somewhere else, except for the native indians. As long as we continue to place tags on everyone, the divide will remain and racism will never improve. Didn't mean to pick on you, It's all outta love. By the way, don't let my avatar fool ya. :-)
