Hibakusha (被爆者, Hibakusha?) is the term widely used in Japan referring to victims of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The Japanese word translates literally to "explosion-affected people." As of March 2005, there were 266,598 hibakusha certified by the Japanese government.[1] Almost all live in Japan, but several thousand bomb survivors live in Korea and elsewhere.

We have a dear friend who had just left H when the bomb detonated. She turned around and walked back to begin cleaning up. In her life it has meant a fierce attachment to the Japanese concept of "honor" in the midst of our culture which finds it hard to understand. A teenager when the bomb dropped, she continued the code of hard work until she retired at 76. Humbled by life and tragedy, she remained in the same job for 30 years rather than face the bigotry of her fellow workers if she accepted a promotion.
She also developed cancer, most likely from the radiation.
