I have observed this the other day while at the park, watching about 15 ducks, all in the same position. They were napping! Why on earth do they stand on ONE leg and tuck the other into their bodies while at the same time, tuck their heads into their feathers? They sure do have alot of balance and equalibrium! It amazed me as I sat and studied them, even while children were amuck, and laughing around them, they still sayed in the same position! Could someone please explain this phenomenon?

I really want to flag this question to find out the answer, but I can't, so I'll just answer myself with my best guess--they may be protecting the oil in their feathers (which they apply from their glands so their feathers don't get soaked when they're swimming), because otherwise they'd get dirt all over their bottoms.

I don't know if this is the real answer or not, and I've been curious myself for a while, but hopefully there's an avian expert here somewhere!

Cuz they need to stand up while sleeping and they R really good at balancing so they tuck one foot in to keep it nice and warm

my parakeet did the same thing everytime he went to sleep, its a way of conserving energy. In fact its bad if they always use both feet when resting.
