i saw this really cool thing on the show Yummy Mummy. you make three rings out of white posterboard and glue them together to make the shape of a cake. then you decorate the "cake" with newborn diapers, ribbons, flowers, etc. make a lid to fit in the top circle then fill the "cake" up with various baby toys or clothes. how cute and unique is that!

If she's registered somewhere it makes it easy.
Otherwise, do you know what she has, what she still needs? Most new moms, buy plenty of clothes for newborns and toys, because it's all so cute and they can't resist.
If you decide on clothes, think 3-6 or 6-9 months clothes. Babies grow quickly. You can go practical with diapers and such or just a gift certificate. Either way as long as it comes from the heart she'll love it.

I say you give diapers, I've been going to and hearing about alot of baby showers and mommies talking about what they'd really like people to get and the one thing I am constantly hearing is I need diapers or I'd love it if people got me some diapers. She's going to have everything else she needs or wants but nobody ever really thinks to get diapers you could also add to that wipes, creams, diaper bag (kind like a gift basket), lotions, shampoo, baby wash, there are many possibilities. A baby blanket sounds nice too, thats what I usualy give only because I knit and crochet and love giving handmade gifts. Anyways good luck on figuring something out, she'll love what ever you get.

If you have had a baby, you can give her the tihings that you just couldn't live without. I did this for 2 of my friends and they really appreciated it. If you haven't had a baby, I would suggest maybe some clothes (although knowing it's a girl, everyone will do this)or maybe a big basket full of washcloths, onesies (T-shirts that button @ the bottom) some baby bath(body wash), shampoo, burp cloths, wipes, even diapers, because you know she will definately use these things. There is also this rubber duck blow up bathtub that has gotten great reviews that you could actually blow up and put all of the stuff in. This is a cute idea, but it might get a little expensive. You could get her a gift card if you know where she's registered, or get one to Target since they have lots of cool baby stuff.

Take it from a mommy, a seasoned baby shower giver and aunty (that would be me, lol)
She's gonna get a lot of clothes...lots of blankets....lots of cutsie tooties things.
Try these cute ideas:
Buy a baby tub and fill it with a baby towel, shampoo, soap, washcloth, baby powder and lotion
Go to a local chain portrait studio and get a gift card. I know walmart has packages as low as 10 bucks! Then you can buy an awesome photo album to go with it.
Take a diaper geenie and fill it with clean unused diapers! So it's like two gifts in one!
How about a mommy survival kit? LOL. A nice basket with lotion, bath salts, a book about raising a baby with a romance novel (LOL) chocolates, etc.... because it's nice to be a pampered mommy too!

I wish I would have received more diapers! I know people want to be creative and buy cute toys and clothes, but diapers are what we spent the most money on! We had grandmothers who bought plenty of clothes. Also, if your friend is going to breastfeed, the Boppy pillow is wonderful. I used it so much. Now, my daughter is a bit big to nurse using the Boppy, but we used it for 10 months. Gift cards are always good too.

My suggestion is to either make her a gift basket with lots of little $1 type toys, cups, spoons, forks... at Wal Mart they have packs of "disposable" cups, forks and spoons... throw in some onsies, socks and a bib and you can get out for about 15 bucks.... OR, you could give some diapers and wipes, you can never have enough of those....dont just stick to the newborn stuff.. you may find some bigger sized clothes on a sales rack that the child could wear next summer...

I agree with everyone who says no blankets or clothing! (Unless they are homemade. I love homemade sweaters and blankets)
I often give Robeez shoes to my expecting friends. These are the cutest little leather slippers that come in all sizes 0-6 months, 6-12 months, etc. Babies can't pull them off (a problem with socks and many booties) so that is a big plus!
They cost about $26 dollars and you can get them online or at lots of stores including Nordstrom.

If she registered, be sure to gets something from that. It sucks to get stuff you didnt want. Also make sure to tell the cashier its for the registry. Also stay clear of clothes, they will get a ton from the grandparents and all the people who didnt follow the registry, and "just had to buy it, it was so cute." NO PINK, again they'll get a ton. Diapers are always needed. My best advice is to give something they dont know they'll need: a tummy time play mat that converts to an older baby playtime (things that convert are alway cool), miracle swaddle blanket, http://www.lucky-baby.com sling, toy hammock, toys for older babies that they can store for later, toy box, if you must get clothes get them in older baby sizes.

I agree with most of the other people. While clothes are cute, things like diapers and wipes are much more useful as they are soooo expensive. Generic toys are great to. You could probably find something that would work for a newborn, but that would also be great for the first few months of life. (ie: a rattle etc)
