I am American, living in Mexico. I plan to teach English to some Mexican adults.?

Question

I would like to find teaching materials like vocabulary and verbs and and other areas to teach online that I can print out to use as handouts.....preferably in Spanish with English translation and pronounciation. I do speak Spanish myself, however, not perfectly, but, enough to be able to communicate with my students. My class will be in a home with only a chalkboard and whatever handouts I can provide. Therefore, I need to make copies of any written material I can find online.....common vocabulary, colors, days of the week, months, courtesies, etc. I have books that I used to teach myself Spanish and plan to utilize them, but, here in Mexico, it is hard to find anything for teaching English as everything is in Spanish. I do not have money to invest in materials or teaching books or programs. Does anyone know of a good website that I can find what I need to start? Thank you for your interest and response.

First you will want to group together like things. If you decide to do for example clothing then google images and then type or write the English word below them. You can arrange them on a page just so, or you can cut them out and tape them so that they are how you want them and photocopy that.
Another suggestion is to look at the book that you used to learn Spanish. Follow that as a guide and make your own practice sheets.
You could photocopy a page for learning Spanish. White out the Spanish words and replace them with English. It will make a clean copy.
I suggest that you start with basic greetings, the alphabet, numbers. How are you, Where are you from? What is your name? Use the numbers to exchange phone numbers... what is your phone number? They can practice the alphabet by spelling their names. Then you can spell some English names to them and have them write down what you are saying. You write the answer on the chalkboard and they can check their answers.
Move on with some nouns such as boy, girl, man, woman, teacher, doctor, etc. Explain definite articles (the) and indefinite articles (a, an, some).
Maybe group colors with clothing items. They can then learn the order of adjectives in a sentence... we say red shirt... they say shirt red.
Do adjectives; tall, short, etc. Teach them how to describe themselves. Bring in some old magazines. Have them choose a picture, glue it to a paper and then they should write 5 sentences or so to describe that person. You can also do that with clothing; have them describe the clothing that the people are wearing. It is an informal assessment that allows you to see what they are doing well and what they need more practice with. Circle the mistakes and have them clean it up. Then they can read their sentences to the class to work on pronunciation.
With clothes you could also introduce the verb to wear. With adjectives introduce to be; I am you are, she is/he is, we are, they are...
Good luck. One more idea; they can cut out the pictures that you give them and make flashcards to help them study. If you plan to give them quizzes you can use the same paper and just white out the English. It will photocopy well and they will write the word.

I would recommend against using traditional translation-style materials and opt instead for English-only flash cards, work sheets and other handouts.
I've been teaching EFL to adults for about ten years and have had the most success when I have avoided as much as possible the native language of the learners. Of course, some will want explanations of different concepts you present to them, and the use of Spanish will help them grasp that, but they need to avoid falling into the trap of learning by translation. Rather, emphasize the need for COMMUNICATION and that, for starters, if they need to use body language and broken English but in the end are able to communicate the idea they are trying to get across, this is success. Your Spanish is as good as it is and improves because you are immersed in it. You need to create as much of an immersion environment as you can so that, in spite of the frustration and headaches, they can learn as much as possible. Good luck and enjoy!

I am sure that your students are beginners.so what you are suppose to do is first you prepare a curriculum contains English alphabet in the first page.Then simple words that you know.But this words must be the learners need them in their daily activities.Then you help them to construct sentences(simple sentences).e.g you give the word 'wash',then you make them to do sentences like:"I wash my face every morning.",I wash my hand before I eat." etc.Based on this example you proceed.I also advise you begin with "Simple Present Tense".This will help the learners to capture your lesson quickly.
I hope my suggestion will help you a little.
