Because in the American society mediocrity has been rewarded for a long long time. Sorry to be harsh to the kiddies but everyone gets a ribbon for participation? or even as old as the 9th grade level there are C and D sports teams so everyone can play? Unfortunetly this progress as we get older and we see more and more rewards for mediocrity.
