i have to leave a gap of 8 mm around the perimeter of the room. this allows the floor to expand and retract. right now, the gap looks like a ditch, how do i make it look more attractive and still have the gap? is there anyway i can cover it up ?

Quarter round or shoe molding.

The answers above are correct quarter round. The company that sold the laminate flooring to you will probably make one, but unless you have selected a tile/stone pattern vs a wood pattern. It would save you probably 75% to get generic quarterround at your local home depot, match your stain to your floor and save some $$... Gives a great finished look and will get rid of your "ditches". At your doorways, thresholds work the same way as quarterround by hiding the gap.

Quarter round is by far the most popular just remember to make sure its nailed to the baseboard and not the floor when installed. Also this trim can usually be obtained from the same retailer that you got your floor from in the same finish to match your floor or you can by it for about 30cent a foot and stain or paint it yourself.
