In order to get my CPA license I had to take a job with my internal auditing department. The job will require me to travel 35% of the time. I will take about 5 or 6 trips a year for two weeks and than return, so about 10 total flights. I have not been on a plane since 1999. Do you think air travel is very safe?

I know there are so many planes taking off and landing each day. We have not had a major accident since 2001 in NYC, until last week. I am just a little bit nervous.

Air travel is a bit safer but the statistics are also a bit misleading. They usually use "deaths per miles traveled" as a basis. http://www.newton.dep.anl.gov/askasci/gen99/gen99845.htm

This is misleading because the takeoff and landing are more dangerous in flying compared to actually travelling in a car or travel train. Once you are in the air, it is safer, but you still have to land. This is comparing apples and oranges in my opinion. There are also millions of people who drive every day who don't die in accidents compared to maybe 20-25,000 flights per day. If you took the statistics of "deaths per number of attempted trips" then it may be just as dangerous. Commerical airliners are about 7 times safer than driving but other commuter flights are much more dangerous.
See http://www.planecrashinfo.com/cause.htm and http://www.planecrashinfo.com/index.html, http://hazmat.dot.gov/riskmgmt/riskcompare.htm (more likely to die in plane crash than lightning strike)

Also, if you define "dangerous" as chance of dying in a crash, death in an airplane crash is around 70-80%. Not to mention the chance of dying in a terrorist attack when driving is almost zero.

Still, I would not worry too much. Safety is not only about dying but being injured. Most statistics concentrate on deaths. You are much more likely to be INJURED in a car than in a plane. So, I guess, talking about general safety, flying is actually safer.

I personally don't like flying because it is a hassle, I don't like the "experience" of being in the air, and prefer to drive and see the sights. There are people such as stewardesses who fly their whole life without even an emergency. But then there are people who drive buses and trains their whole life without an accident. When I fly, I just drink a lot to the point where I don't even care if it crashes.

My hubby travels about 3 times a month on an airplane for 20 years.. He has returned home safe every time. Of course accidents happen, but so do driving in a car.

It is in the U.S. One bad accident in five years is remarkable. There are some 20-25,000 flights a day in the U.S. I believe.

well, it depends on what you mean by "safe"

passenger airline travel is certainly much much safer than riding in a car for the same amount of time

as transportation goes, it is very very safe
