A clique is usually used in junior high and high schools to describe groups of people that are friends.
Gangs have initiation rituals, brag about killing people, rape, and usually make up a name for their gang.

informally some people might intermingle the word cliques and gangs.

Cliques are groups of people who fit in together, be it the way they were raised, their intelligence, or way of dress. Examples being goth, grunge, rich, geeks and so on.

Gangs are groups that usually are up to no good and thrive on violence and drug use. They usually require their members to do something extreme to join like rob, get beat up (called being beat in to the gang), or even murder. Examples are the famous Crips and Bloods.

A gang is a group of people associated not by their tastes in clothes, hair etc. but more by neighborhoods and they represent pride. Cliques are more of social standings i.e. preps, nerds, etc.

Growing up we all had little cliques of friends we gravitated twards, non violent, maybe just a little gossipy. I always thought of gangs as groups who liked to defend their territory and fight for what they felt was theirs.

one very telling difference is that urban gangs often have automatic weapons at their disposal, do they not? cliques, generally, are weaponless and shop relentlessly at upscale malls. ;-)

Both are exclusive groups.

Cliques will assault you mentally.
Gangs will assault you physically.

Cliques are for those who prefer to talk than fight.
Gangs are for those who prefer to fight than talk.
