I am pissed! I have worked hard all my life putting money into that program and I'll be damned if I'll let it get pissed away. Why do we keep sending money to foreign countries? Where were they when Katrina hit? Why don't we instead, put money into our SSA? For God's sake , let's take care of our own. Speaking only for myself, if it happens, I won't pay another dime in income taxes. I hope some of you will join with me. They certainly can't lock all of us up. But I am willing to go to jail if that's what it takes to fight this thing. Boy am I pissed. If we had elected Ross Perot, he would have set things straight. No, I'm not a campaigner or anything like that. In fact, that was the first time I have felt strongly enough about a candidate to actually go vote. I hope you will help me. We all deserve to receive our SSA benefits. It's a crime for them to take them from us.

First of all, let's not confuse paper money with reality. It doesn't matter how much money is recorded on paper (or electronically) in the Social Security fund, if there are not enough workers to take care of the retired population. The big problem is not money, but demographics, because there soon will be lots more retired Baby Boomers, and not enough people of working age to sustain a strong economy, regardless of how much money is recorded in the Social Security fund. However, the solution is really very simple: just increase the working age US population by allowing more immigration. With more immigrants from developing countries, there will be plenty of workers to sustain the economy. No big deal.

Yes, this really is lousy. I've been working on Social Security reform for people with disabilities since 1996 and have seen some positive changes after a lot of collaborating and negotiating. You might wanna roll up your sleeves and join us in taking charge of this crucial safety net. I poked around a bit and found a link that leads to information about the policy work the AARP is doing about the solvency of the Social Security Fund. Here it is: http://www.aarp.org/research/socialsecurity/financing/
I hope you're a do-er and not just a complainer. We need pissed people like you to learn they system and help us fix it.

I am sure that you did not recieve that from the government. It is junk mail of some kind. To all those who are blaming Bush for the current social security crisis, remember what Bush tried to do. He tried to give Americans control of their own SSAs, but the Democrats fought hard to defeat the idea. If Bush had his way, social security would be privatized, and we wouldn't be worrying about it going bankrupt.
But seriously, social security has far more time than only 11 years.

It is quite a problem... and having many illegal immigrants taking advantage of it doesn't help. I also agree we can't just be giving money away to so many countries. I don't think you will be shafted though. The government will probably steal money from other programs to pay the ssa. But it will be a huge amount in the hole!

Something is wrong with that letter. The latest figures showed the SSA would be broke around 2043. Besides the government cannot let that happen. Check and make sure you did not get junk mail that looks like it came from them.

And this is news to you??
Ummm...
Welcome to the 1990's...
You should see what Governor Bush has planned for the SSA, should he get elected!
****************************************************
For real though, The SSA will send you a quarterly letter that states how much you have put in since you have begun working, and, about how much you will receive when you retire.
There is no way in HELL that they will send you something about them being bankrupt.
Primary elections are next month... and then the Elections in November... think of the timing, take a breath and relax.

The national government did not tell you that social security would be bankrupt in 11 years. That was from someone else.

nothing is wrong with the social security system that the people of the U.S cannot fix. Just get rid of those politicians who propose to privatize social security because that's only a means to get control of the funds and drain it dry....

I believe the document actually says something to the effect: "If no provisions are made to fund the future of social security...."
