I guess that was his way of escaping reality and taking a timeout in middle of life, just like some people go fishing or to the gym. Do you know his poem "Stopping by the Woods on a Snowy Evening"? it talks about that subject.

I can't speak for him, but for me, poetry writing brings clarity to a situation. It also is an escape from the chaos of everyday life.
