Hi, what's the word for when a certain brand name, like "Kleenex" or "Xerox," becomes synonymous with the general category of that item? Thanks.

A lot of that depends on your location.
In the various parts of the country you might hear the following conversation.
"Would you like something to drink?"
"Yes."
"What?"
"Coke."
"What kind?"
"Pepsi."

Or vice-versa.

Around where I live, we call our vacumes "Kirby" whether they are Kirby's or not.

I'm sure there are a lot more, but I just can't think of any right now...

It can sometimes be called simply an "eponym", but the proper term is "proprietary eponym"

More Info:
An eponym is a general term used to describe from what or whom something derived its name. Therefore, a proprietary eponym could be considered a brand name (trademark or service mark) which has fallen into general use.

Funny you ask?

I have wondered the same thing. Are you old enough to remember "Sniglets" from HBO's news parody show (Not Necessarily the News)? This would be a perfect definition to have sent into them.

Here is another example...Jell-O.

BTW...I don't think eponym is correct. If that answerer sees this, could you post a source. I'd be interested in the word, as I have wondered about it as well.

Read the details, chumps. She's asking for the term for such words, not more examples thereof.

I don't have an answer for you, but I'm putting this on my watch list in case anyone gives you a correct answer. Great question!
