Maybe because if there was a smile then it might appear that the person is enjoying being dead. That would seriously affect those people who make money off of the fear of death that everyone has. Like the person EVER looks natural after having the cosmetic work done for the viewing....

I am gonna be gross but think about how stiff the dead flesh is.
If they stretched iit any further it would look like a scowl or a scream rather than a big smile. so they do a regulation tiny smile. I am never going to have an open coffin funeral and let embalmers chop up my body and put makeup on me.

LOL.
I concur.

No one ever said being dead was funny.
I think it would make remembering someone easier.
Because then you would get the impression that they were happy.
And that's what the living would like to think, am I right?
I don't want someone who has passed away looking sad.
Who wants a sad funeral?
I like to remember the good and fun times I had with the people I lost.
It's a celebration of life.

maybe it because that would take to much rearreangement of facial structure. were talking rigor mortis here man, so they'd probably have to whack at the person's lips to get it open and smiling. which would be pretty brutal. its more humane to just slather on make up than to twist and bend a dead guys lips. dont worry though, there are those people who die smiling. to ensure that you get to see one, be nice to other people, you never know when people just plop down dead, in the meantime you might have increased thir happy-meter enough to have them smile before they die. then youll get invited to their funeral coz you were such a nice boy to them youll finally get to say hell yeah at a wake.

because it takes more muscles to smile and with no muscle control, the muscles just hang there. Since they sew the mouth shut to keep it from gapping, they'd have to insert wires and stuff to make a smile. The smile would take lots of work to look natural. What one person thinks is so-and-so's smile, is not what everyone else thinks is their smile.

Most people would object.
They do have to sew the mouths shut however, otherwise they would gape open.

Perhaps a wink might be intriguing!

People are made up to be natural...death is not a fun event. I'd be spooked to see a big smile!!!

wouldn't having the muscles that make a smile happen be unnatural after death?
