They are actually a perennial in areas that have very mild winters because they do not freeze out all the way in the winter and will get new growth in the spring. It does depend on the variety, however, if they are considered annual or perennial. There are both kinds and quite a few different types.

Many plants are an annual in some climates and a perennial in other climates. The warmer the climate the more likely that the plant will not totally die during the winter an return the next year. Lantana's are one of those plants that can go either way based on the climate.

Lantana is about half and half, but technically I believe its a perennial. It has continually come back in my yard year after year. Now I do live in Texas where we rarely freeze and Lantana gets pretty woody. I wouldn't expect them to come back if you plant them now.

Lantanas are annuals, but are tough cookies and will over-winter if they have protection. Plant them in your garden and provide mulch when the icy winter sets in. OR...You could plant them in containers and leave them outside as long as its mild, but bring them in for the worst of the winter.

they could be self seeding too

I would plant them just incase they self seed -this way they will seed themselves where you want them.

If they are half hardy they may not comeback if they are in containers cuz they can freeze easily if they are not in the ground.
