I have a DVD player, thats obviously not the same thing?!

Honestly I think you would be better off going with the DVR that comes with cable or satellite. Tivo isn't all that user freindly and I think it interferes more than it helps. But yes it does have a monthly fee, so do the DVR's. They are all around the same price its more usabilty. I have used all but direct tv DVR, because my mom got tivo instead. I recommend them in this order Comcast, Dish, Tivo. Definitely get one of these programs though, they are worth it and it will change tv watching for you forever

A DVR (digital video recorder) allows you to record TV shows. Think of it as a computer hard drive that allows you to store TV shows. TIVO is a type of DVR.

I have never used Tivo, but a co-worker of mine really likes it. I have a Dish Network DVR and I love it. I can record up to 100 hours of shows for watching later. The really nice thing about a DVR is that you can skip the commercials! For my Dish Network DVR, I have to pay about $6 extra per month.
