is there really a such thing as being half jewish?

i was reading about rob schneider(i think that's how you spell his last name) but anyway he made a comment about the whole mel gibson issue and said that he was half jewish. how can you be half jewish? isn't jewish a religion, you're either jewish or not. at first i was thinking one of his parents was jewish and the other wasnt but you can't be half a religion it's not same as being half this race and half another race. this isn't just jewish, all religions so can anbody tell me what that means please?

It would appear one of his parent's was of the Jewish faith. One can be half-Jewish if that is how they choose to describe their upbringing. For instance, I have friends who are Jewish and Protestant. As children they celebrated Jewish religious traditions as well as Protestant traditions; while being very well versed in both religions. However, as adults, they practice nothing....though they have referred to themselves as half-Jewish in conversation.

you had it right..1 parent is, the other isn't...he doesn't practice but respects his practicing parents beliefs..jewish by birth..non practicing..so half is possible imho...what if one parent was of color..whould he then be half???
