My son-in-law has a pet farret that is 12 years old now. Life expectancy of a ferret is about 6-7 years. Vet says she is ok because she still eats well and other things. He said no need to put her down.

We had a German shepherd/collie crossbreed who lived to be 16. She developed cancer of the mouth at age 12 and wasn't expected to live more than 6 months to a year. We got another puppy to help ease the impending loss. . .and we think Molly lived for another 4 years in order to spite Max.

Like the vet said, "She lived 4 more years to make sure that he didn't get anything he wasn't entitled to or a minute sooner than he was entitled to get it!" :)
