Bettas make wonderful pets. They can learn tricks if you are very patient with them. They live around 5 years if cared for properly.
Look here, great website. Lots of info on the little guys, and check out the stock shop. Amazing!

If you want a tank, you can't go wrong with Mollys, Platys, Guppies, Blackskirt and lampeye Tetras. They are sturdy little fishies.
Good luck, consider getting a book on tropical aquariums. They have the best, most accurate information.

I know from experince. Depending on your schedule you may be able to get something that average to take care of. But I suggest you start with gold fish. They're easier than tropical fish but eventually once you get the hang of feeding periods and cleaning you'll be ready for fish such as Jack Dempseys.

Fish aren't ever that easy to take care of... especially if you want them to live that long. There is a lot of care to be taken into their aquariums, but if you've got that kind of time, I would suggest tropical fish (not cichlids, those are the aggressive kind of fish) I think in our tank the little guy that has lasted the longest is the plecostomus!!

I don't know of too many fish sports so I don't know if you can do much betting on fish. I've heard that beta fish will fight if you put them together. You may be able to come up with some betting system on fighting betas.

The big bubbly eyed gold fish are very fancy, and very easy to care for. They have the big eyes. They don't require heat so adjusting the water temp isn't very hard.

Betas are pretty hardy and colourful and smart. ; )
I have one in each of my tanks, though of course never two males in the same tank.
