Chemical Lab Tech with experience in the rubber industry. Prefer
experience in Research and Development of compounds and
processes involved with vulcanizing, testing, molding, and
recycling of rubber products.



Chemical laboratory assistant


Tasks

You work in the chemical lab in our research and development division, where you perform jobs in quality control and failure analysis. You carry out analyses of:

* metallic and non-metallic materials
* rolling bearings and rolling bearing components
* lubricating oils, lubricating greases and other fluids

Training

Practical training will take place in the chemical lab and includes the following topics:

* Using instrumental analysis methods< Measuring physical variables and material-related values
* Determining elements in steel, alloys and ceramic materials
* Checking material data< Working with acids, lyes, gases and salts
* Calculating chemical reactions
* Conducting, evaluating and documenting chemical lab tests
* Implementing measures to prevent environmental damage

This apprenticeship takes 3.5 years to complete.

Career Opportunities:
Graduates may be involved in laboratory or production work, research and development, as well as chemical and instrument sales. Career opportunities are widespread in government agencies, educational institutions, and industries which include the petroleum, plastics, foods, pharmaceuticals, mining, metallurgy, and nuclear fields. Work in these areas should appeal to students who are practically inclined (quality control and production) and/or academically inclined (research and development). With increased environmental testing for various contaminants, graduates from this program find rewarding jobs in a variety of areas.

Program Description:
In a developing industrial economy, the science of chemistry has become increasingly important. There are very few industries that do not require some degree of chemical testing. Typical functions of graduates trained in chemistry include qualitative and quantitative analysis, quality control of raw materials and finished products, and research and development. Graduates must be able to carry out experiments, assist in the interpretation and correlation of data, assess existing analytical methods, develop new techniques, and supervise or manage lab operations.

The first year provides the student with an understanding of the basic principles and techniques involved in chemistry, other engineering fields, and computer applications. Immediately upon the completion of first year, a student may elect to obtain a Chemical Laboratory Assistant certificate by doing a placement.

The second year of the program stresses more advanced analytical techniques involving a wide range of instrumentation. In addition, practical courses in microbiology, unit operations and industrial processes, statistical interpretation, and presentation of data, provide the student with a wide range of employable skills. The student successfully completing the second year is qualified to obtain a Chemical Engineering Technician diploma.

The third year provides the student with more advanced analytical techniques. Greater emphasis is placed on the theoretical aspects. The broad range of courses form a solid basis for employment or future education. Upon successful completion of the third year, the student is qualified to obtain a Chemical Engineering Technology diploma.

Admission Requirements:
Required academic preparation -
• OSSD/OSSGD or equivalent with courses at the general, advanced, (C), (U), (U/C) or (O) or
• mature applicant

Recommended academic preparation:
• Grade 12 mathematics, chemistry, and physics at the (C), (U) or general level.

Note: Applicants who, in addition to the above requirements, have Ontario Academic Credits (OACs) in English, chemistry, biology, and one or more of the mathematics courses (algebra preferred), are considered for admission to Year Two of the program.
