I once worked for this woman who said her son was a good guy, intelligent, frugal, kind hearted and so forth. She told me this weeks before I met him. Then I met him, and over the course of time, I found out he was a liar, cheat, unhumanitarian, gross, and a slob, and a miserable person to be with.

Why would a mother lie about her son. I know she loves him, but who was she trying to fool? I got a good image from the mother, but the son tossed the image in the trash.

Moral of the story: Never ever trust the parents if they paint a picture of their grown son or daughter as a saint, because it means otherwise. Get to know them and flee if it's contradictory.

In Response to RosieC: He already made me flee when I saw how he acted and treated his mother dishonorably.

Maybe the child is a saint in the mothers eyes. Is isn't that she is intentionally lying to you but believes in him so much she doesn't see the bad in him. Maybe she doesn't know about it because he hides it from her so well.

My son is only 14 months old and most of the time I rave over him because, well, every mother raves over a baby, but I'm also not ashamed to reveal his naughty side either (like when he screams all blasted night or takes his poopy diaper off and smears it across every conceiveable surface or feeds the dog crayons or...well you get the point).

Sadly, many parents sugar-coat their children's behaviour, even when the child is a "responsible" adult because they are unwilling to admit that they may have failed as a parent and thus, as a person.

Sometimes it works the other way around as well. A friend of mine always said her mother was a saint, the perfect matron. Yet when this poor girl (and I swear to you it's not me, it really is just a friend) was raped by her own stepfather, the mother abruptly testified in court that her daughter had always been a nasty little liar and often used vicious lies to manipulate others so she could get her way. This was most assuredly untrue. It effectively destroyed their relationship and they have never patched things up. Sad, tragic.

Anyway, just be glad you've rid yourself of the sleazebag and move on. At least you now know what to watch for.

Not my mother in law. She hated her in law sons and daughters and she did not like most of her children. Only time she talked good about people is when she introduced my husband to some bimbo and said what a good wife the bimbo would make a good wife. I was not there at the time.

I don't think mothers "lie" about their sons. That is just the way that they see them. To a mother their son is the gleam in their eye. I have three sons and I try to see them as they are but I'm sure I'm looking through rose color glasses.

How true. Mothers do have the oedipal complex to praise their sons. Have you ever heard the phrase, I love my own. All parents do that. Especially mothers. They propagandize their own sons and are tenacious fans. Have you ever heard one mother tell you the truth about her son. Then she would chased away any prospective matches.

They do it because it's all they've got in life. Pretty sad. I'm glad I'm not a woman.

This sounds less like a question and more like a speech.
