It depends on why they are breaking.
I'm a nail tech so here is what I would be asking and looking for.
1. What do you do throughout the day?
2. Are you active with your hands?
3. Are you a nurse? Do you do a lot of dishes? Gardening?
4. Are you on any medication that could cause dehydration?
5. How is your circulation? Is it cold where you work?
6. Do you leave the heater blowing on your hands while driving?
7. What sort of dish soap or body wash are you using?
Once we narrow down the source(s) of the trouble then we can take action either eliminating certain activities or providing additional protection during some.
Here are my 3 top tips I have all my clients follow regardless:
1) Drink more water!
2) Wear medical gloves while doing dishes (Most people hate the big bulky yellow ones.
3) Put cuticle oil on every night before bed. It will sit the longest stretch of time, hydrating and keeping the nail plate flexible and less likely to break during the day's activities.
As for applying a nail "HARDENER" or "STRENGTHENER" that is not always the answer. They can make brittle nails even more brittle by making them too hard.
You may need a NAIL TREATMENT which includes a protein base or a calcium base. It is possible that you need to soften your nails in order to make them more flexible so they don't chip and snap all the time.
Furthermore, keep in mind that water is one of the worst things for your nails. So keeping that oil on (Use olive oil if that is all you have) will help counter the effects of the water dehydration.
Once you start a new program just remember that it takes about 4 to 6 months to completely replace your existing nail plate. This means that what you are dealing with now is a result of what you were doing to care for your nail health 4 to 6 months ago.
Best of luck to you.

I have long nails, everyone always asks if they are fake and this is what i do. It may sound weird but it works when you file your nails go up each side, never go down, this will keep them from spiltting and getting hang nail when you do the top of your nails round them out but always go one way don't go back and forth this will keep the tops from splitting, get some nail strengthener from the dollar store for like $4 and put a coat on every day clean the bottom of your nail and put it on the bottom too. I hope this helps you.

Eat gelatin (jello) and also keep your nails short and filed square with rounded edges (not oval or too sharp). There are an array of nail products (like Sally Hanson hard as nails) that you put on like nail polish, but you can also get silk wraps or gels to give your nails added strength. These are best if professionally applied by the nail salon.

It depends if you got the fake nails or the real ones.
My nails can grow long and look like fake ones, but I too, had to learn how to care for them.
I keep mine in shape by not being rough, such as tapping my fingernails on a table, smashing them on the keys when I type, ect. I also heard that using the nail polish that strengths your nails is good.

Calcium. Hair, skin, bones and nails thrive on it.
It's cliche' - but it's the building block of the body.
On that note, I'm going to go eat some ice cream to get my daily calcium!
The jello thing is good too.

I've heard that if you put garlic on them it strengths them, or you can just buy the products they sell at the store that make your nails stronger

Eat a cup of jello every day for a while then every other day. Gelatine makes your nails stronger. It is naturally in red meat but if you don't eat a lot of red meat you may be deficient in it. You could also take gelatine tablets.
