I the question of which came first, it was in fact the egg. You see, the mutation which resulted in the first chicken would have happened in either the egg or the sperm of the parent chicken. The egg which grew from that union would have been the first genetically modern chicken egg.
This is a massive oversimplification because species evolve over many, many generations, but you get the idea.
