I have spent a significant amount of time researching the flood described in the Bible and have come to the conclusion that the tale of Noah is based upon a far older story.
The reason why I have come to this conclusion is that almost every civilisation in the ancient world had stories about the great flood and people and animals surviving on board a single large boat. It could be the case that some of these stories are based upon the story of Noah but as many of the civilisations involved predated the period of Noah by thousands of years and others are separated by thousands of miles (such as the Mayans and the Ancient Chinese) I think that this is evidence that the story of Noah is a branch of a much older tale.
I think it is the case the flood did not actually cover the whole of the earth - where did so much water come from? Also where did it go? We know from a basic knowledge of weather taught to us early on in schools how rains and rivers form a water-cycle and thus we can deduce the water-level of the planet will not actually really change enough to flood to the level of the highest mountains.
I think the flood represnts the end of the last ice age where sea levels rose by many metres flooding a large amount of all the coasts. It is usual for people (excepting certain desert dwellers) to live near to sources of water and as such almost all inhabited land would have been flooded. Thus all the villages and settlements would have been flooded and destroyed along with much of the populace. The remainder would have suffered from the loss of their hunting grounds.
Noah represents the leader of a group of people who survived the floods by using boats. The animals would have been only herd animals and other domestic beasts like dogs. The people would have taken these on the boats under Noah's instruction and as such domesticated animals native to the flooded low-lying areas survived.
Thus we will probably never find Noah's arc as it was probably not actually one single boat but a small fleet of ships carring a whole group of people from which many others would have decended. Also the actual event happened thousands of years before the supossed date and as such the reamins are very unlikly to have survived from such an early period.
If you would like information on the other stories from around the world of the great flood (such as the Sumerian story of it or the Greek version of events) you can get the details by looking on wikepedia. They all are very similar in most respects and make for an interesting read.

There have been several serious attempts to discover the ark. Several persons have claimed to see it, however proof has always evaded them. I have a friend, John Morris, who has made several visits to Mr. Ararat. He tells me that the mountain has been so well searched that if anything is there it would have to be in pieces. Most likely there is nothing there.
The most recent material which generated a great deal of interest was some NASA photographs which became known as the Ararat anomaly. It is pretty much confirmed to be a rock formation.

There was a National Geographic show years ago where they claimed they found it out in some desert somewhere. I assume if it was the real thing we would have heard more about it.
