I can understand that people come first, but is there an actual policy that after people are out, no more entries to the home?

Wow I'm surprised by all the naswers so quickly..

The reason I asked is because I had a family member that had a housefire, and after all people were out the firefighters would not go back in, or let any of the family go back in, and their family housecat died of smoke inhailation. (The house had more smoke damage than actual fire) The kids were more affected by the pet loss than the house loss.

Not that I've heard of. Many departments are training their firefighters in pet rescue and resuscitation.

However, if it would put them in mortal danger, they probably won't go in after a pet.

That is false .
If the owner of the pets has a decal live animals or pets inside ,the firemen will rescue them .
It is the pet owners responsibility to post the decal .

As far as I know they go in as long as it can be considered "safe". A life is a life and if you've just lost everything in a fire the last thing they want you to have to deal with is losing a pet.

You certainly hear about firemen who have rescued pets, but I don't think they are required to risk their lives to do so. They would also have to know that there were pets there to be searched for and where the pets were likely to be located.

I know several volunteer fireman and they've told me they aren't even required to go into the house to rescue you or me. They even said the department doesn't technically have to go to every fire call either. But this could be because they're just volunteer fire departments.
