You need language skills-ability to read and write- A love of reading doesn't hurt either. If you are also blessed with imagination and talent, you are on your way. I completed high school and went no farther with my education but always loved to read and English was my favorite subject in school. I am not a really successful writer but have managed to have approximately 1/4 of my 200 poems and nonfiction published so far. I started sending my poetry out 4 years ago. If you love to write, just do it. Although more education can't hurt, I don't believe it is an absolute requirement.

Perseverence is the key as some others have already mentioned, you just need to start writing and submitting your work for publication. Do not take any one editor at his word. Some of the greatest writers had terrible grammer. Long run on sentences, etc. but their ideas were what counted in the end. Some people writing today are so far off the mark that it is sad, yet they get published, because they are saying what people want to hear. Intelligence often stops a writer from writing because he is afaid he will not get published. Therefore write what you know, they say. Good luck! I will be waiting for your writing efforts to come to fruitation.

You have to be able to write well, which means you must understand all that annoying stuff like grammar (including noun/verb agreement), punctuation, spelling, etc. It helps to understand the basic structure of a novel, and things like first person vs. third person and so on. You don't need a formal education beyond the high school level to learn any of this, if you actually learn what they teach you there. Everything else is just reading a lot, and paying attention to what you read. You certainly don't need a college degree in English, for example, to be a writer.

You need to know how sentence, paragraph and story structures work. Knowladge of spelling, grammer and punctuation is also a must. Authors also need to have creative minds and be able to think outside of the box.
Also, it is very valuble to know how to revise, edit and proof read your own work as well as being able to accept criticism constructive or otherwise. I'm not saying that you should simply accept negative criticism, but try to find out why someone is being rude/insulting/or just plain dislikes it. Anybody willing to put things in the public eye needs to have a thick mental skin, otherwise things turn ugly quickly.

I would think you would have to have the ability to read and write. Other than that, you don't have to have a degree or anything to be a writer. There are 10 and 12 year olds who've had books published...very obviously, they wouldn't have an advanced degree or anything like it.

To submit a manuscript or a text, I don't think there are any requirements. If you are naturally talented and write well go for it.
It would probably help if you had a background in writing, creative writing, journalism ect..but I don't think that it is necessary

The ability to think, read, and write, and enough intelligence to avoid being taken to the cleaners by shifty lawyers and publishers.
