is it just someone having a bad day or stale coffee? or do you think that overall there's a big difference in the quality of customer service at similar businesses in different parts of the country? not just friendliness, but efficiency and ability too.

have you noticed regional differences? who, where, when?

extra credit: is friendliness and helpfulness more important to you than professionalism and efficiency? how?

When I moved from Nevada to California in 1999 I noticed a huge difference. People in California were short & rude. Where Nevadans were more friendly. I wouldn't even say that Californians were more professional & efficent them seemed to have an overall attitude of "I don't give a F***k". I thought that it was like that because of the fast paced life style in Cali, but when I went to Salt Lake City, Ut. on a business trip I recieved the worst customer service I had ever recieved in my life. (when I complained to the manager the rude-employee came over afterwards and cussed me out acting as if she wanted to fight me.)

I don't know if this answers your question or not, I think customer service has been on the decline in the past decade as a whole.

Yes, I was just commenting about how tired I am getting of arguing with the customer service people about errors in my bills. They all try to blame it on me. The last one just a few days ago when I called my phone company to find out why they suddenly started chargine me for something called business-to-business when I am not a business (and they are charging me $20 per month for the service). I was told "well, you must have signed up for it because we wouldn't be charging you for it if you hadn't." And then he went on to say, "you should have read the contract you signed" except I never signed any contract--and I've worked in law firms for the last 30 years so I know enough to read and understand everything before you sign. He wanted to continue to argue about who's fault it is but I didn't have time so I just told him to shut up and take that charge off my account since I never signed up for it, don't need it and will not pay for it. And isn't it nice to finally get a customer service person who is courteous and pleasant? I feel like cooperating and we both apologize for taking up their time, etc. And I come away feeling good about that company and don't put a silent hex on the whole organization (and from the way banks and companies are going out of business, my hexes must be working). Companies really ought to train their people who come in contact with customers (not just the customer service dept) to use a little honey because they'd get better results and won't lose customers that way.

My wife was a customer service trainer before she became disabled 5 yrs. ago and the customer service these days drives her crazy! You're right there is no customer service any more. It is rare that anybody even gives you the time of day or even an acknowledgement when you walk into the store. I just prefer a friendly, helpful person over someone who tries to act the part.
Just thank me when I spend my money with you, you know what I mean? It seems so easy to me but I guess most people today are just working for the paycheck and do as little as possible to get through the day. Sad!!

I don't travel long distances, but even locally just between stores, there can be a difference in friendliness and efficiency and ability
I want efficiency first and then friendliness.

California is the worst for customer service.

Professionalism and efficiency are the most important. They are there to do a job, so it's really bad manners not to do it to the best of their ability. No amount of friendliness can compensate for incompetence and laziness.

In California most people in customer service positions are inept. They have no desire to learn or improve their performance. They don't care whether you are satisfied.
California is very classicist. It's possible that they get treated very badly by employers and customers. That's no excuse, though.

I think the South is good with customer service--I hate how customer service is now-people do not take their jobs seriously!

sure, depends what city, big or small and yes what part of the country. Back east they are real snooty, West Coast, more friendly

I'm from the West Coast. Customer service there was generally good. Polite, caring. There is allot of competition so employers expect their customer care people to be good.

We moved to the middle of the country. Here there aren't allot of choices of who you are going to buy a car from, or use to deliver flowers, or order a pizza. The employers don't seem to stress politeness or friendliness.

I think its VERY important to be friendly when you are in customer service. If your efficient but bitchy, I'm probably not going to use you again especially if I have a choice. But if your friendly but take longer to get whatever done, I don't mind forgiving you for blundering a little bit. I've been there, I know how it feels.

That's just me. I suppose if someone was always in a hurry they might not care how friendly someone is as long as they are quick.

Good question!

Goddess Bless!
