For a while my "a" drive did not even show up in the my computer window. I did a disk clean, virus check, and defrag and it came back, but now all the disks read as not formatted. What could have happended! Can we ever get the data off those disks?

On my previous computer my A drive stopped working, it turned out a metal clip from a floppy disk was stuck in it, aha.

Until we figured that out, they have plug and play A drives that plug into the USB slot of your computer, they are really helpful. :D

Try going through the setup on your computer and verify that it recognizes the A drive. Then reinstall the drivers for the floppy drive. This should let you read the disks. They would not have been damaged by the failure of the floppy drive. If all of the above does not solve the problem then you probably do need to replace the drive.

Try replacing it. The drive only, none of the connectors. If that doesn't work, try replacing the grey connector cable. Finally, if that doesn't work, disable the floppy drive as a boot device in the BIOS and use another media for information storage like a ZIP drive (cheap now since it is out-dated) or even USB Flash/Travel/Memory drives (also becoming cheap).

Your drive went bad. Replace it. If you do not want to open the case just buy a usb floppy and get the added bonus of having a faster floppy drive.

Like all things mechanical and electrical, they can go bad. I think you can replace it for pennies. Matter of fact, I think I have 4 or 5 spares in the garage.
