This will happen if you help people who don't deserve your help.

You don't have to be discourage by the character of a few bad people. You have to keep your good nature and continue to help people. But you should beware of the kind of people who you offer help. Your time is valuable to you. You should assign your time to help people who is considerate and appreciate your good heart.

In a long run, you will get into a habit of noticing which people deserve help and which that don't.

I agree that more and more people are out for themselves. I can tell by how many homeless I see these days, or other rudeness to people. It hurts me, because I worry about human kind a lot. The way we are heading, we won't live in the 'peaceful' world we do now. (I say that despite the hate we see now). I think it will be like those crazy sci-fi future movies where people are at war, and they like hid in the ground, and technology, electricity etc will all be gone. I just feel that's too late to change paths, see I need help pushing this load, and I keep telling people we are going the wrong way, so I am forced to go where they go. It's the direction that money, power and greed pointed towards.

As far as you friend, he may have felt embarrassed about needing help, and struck out in 'self defense'. I don't know the circumstance though.

Considerate and appreciative are the things of the past! Their are no rules and no etiquette left. All I can say is take that lesson and run with it and learn that trying to help someone is a waste of time as far as what they should do with their lives. Ive leaned a long time ago to keep my mouth shut! Just let them ramble on and just look like the chihuahua with the bobbing head in the rear car dash. Nobody really wants you to solve their problems anyway, they just need to vent that's all. That's why it is pointless to say anything. Lesson learned. I never get "Thank You's" at work for anything Ive done for the next shift and it makes it really hard for me to want to do anything extra ever! Its just a sign of the times we live in and its only getting worse. What do you do? All you can do is find a way to adjust and get on with it.

There is a saying that goes..."No good deed goes unpunished."
I have never found it to be the case, though. I think some people help others only so they can feel good about themselves and Karma finds a way to punish them for not being genuinely helpful.
