If you are using your notebook periodically throughout the day leave it on hibernate between uses. If you only use it once a day turn it off when you're done. Second question, you can get a usb wireless card that simply plugs into your desktop usb port. Belkin makes and excellent one. You can buy them at Walmart for $40 and you won't have to open your computer or deal with whether or not you have a slot available. Link below

Okay... answer to Question 1: The laptops are far better off if you only turn them off/reboot them for maintenance purposes. It works the internal componente a lot more than just letting it hibernate, or just leaving it on and plugged in.
Answer to question 2: If you are more than 50' from the wireless router, or if running an ethernet cable is otherwise not possible, then you will have to get a wireless pci card or a usb wireless receiver. The PCI cards get the better signal, commonly, but the usb types are very much easier to install... plug 'em in and go.
What kind of router has a maximum of only 4 computers on a wireless system? Most handle 32 wirelessly with no issues. Some can handle 254. You need to make sure that you're not reading that there are 4 wired output hubs, which is very common. If so, ehternet rules state that no more than two hubs can be on a single chain. In otherwords, you can put another hub on each port of the router, so if you have 4 wired outputs, you can add four hubs, with however many outputs they allow.

I'm mixed on shutdown vs. standby. I standby if I am home for the evening, going to be or something I'll just close the lid. If I am going to be moving it around alot I shut down generally.
You can buy wireless cards that go into PCI slots for your desktop computer, so you don't need to wire it. You can generally have more wireless connections than wired, four is just the maximum number of physical connections, so that is not a concern.
