i have an ibm computer with windows xp that used to belong to a college. apparently to ensure that students didn't mess things up they have some sort of security feature that resets everything when the computer is restarted. i can't make any changes or even install new programs without them being gone with the next reboot. anyone know how i can dissable this? i'm thinking that maybe if i reinstall windows? don't even know if that will do it, and even if it would, i could prob buy another good computer for the cost of a windows cd. any suggestions?

If you got this computer from the school, chances are they should give you some instructions on how to remove this. Unless you are on adminstrator acct, you cannot change settings that are set by admin. Oh, and windows cd costs around 100~200. A good pc costs around 500~1000 on sale.

Just buy the windows cd if you cant get into admin, and put the cd in right after the comp boots. You can erase everything on the HD and reinstall windows.

If you are admin, then ask someone else, I dont know anything about it, not even heard of this setting.

Assuming you got it legitimately I am very surprised that an operating system was left on it. You need the adminsitrator's account to reset it. Reloading windows will do it as well but, if it is winXp pro you cannot load winXp home over it unless you wipe everything out and start from scratch.

I'm surprised they didn't erase or remove the hardrive before they sold it to you... But yeah you are better off boot up to your windows CD and doing a clean install of windows and starting from square one.
