Just write the check out to the person in their name. They'll sign it, take it to the bank, and cash it for the money.

RE:
If I write a check out for "Cash," can the reciever cash it at her bank and get the money right away?

Technically the receiver can go to her own bank and cash it, but, her normal check cashing restrictions would apply. If she normally has to wait for 5 days, then, it will be five days. If the bank normally wouldn't hold the check, then, they won't. It doesn't make any difference if the check is made out to a person or "cash". It is because either way, it will go through the same procedure of being cashed.

Not necessarily. First, the bank has to have sufficient funds on hand, they can wait a reasonable length of time to fund the check. Secondly, the check's payee would need to have sufficient collected funds on account to cover the check. The drafter's account will be charged and the payee wil be home free unless some sort of fraud is discovered. Of course the payee will still have to endorse the check with their signature and will likely need to provide identification including a finger print. You can also go to the drafter's bank and either cash it there or have the bank convert the check to a cashier's check, which will ensure that funds are indeed available and reserved specifically for that new cashier's check.

If you go to your bank and want to withdraw cash for yourself, you would make the check out to "Cash", sign the back, and give it to the Teller. (Of course, if you're inside the bank you don't need a check, but can just fill out a withdrawal slip.)

However, if you want to give a check to a friend so the friend can get cash, you must make the check out to their name. They can either take it to their bank to cash or deposit into their account.

If their bank, like my son's, has a hold policy for deposited checks, but your friend needs the cash immdiately and the friend's bank won't cash the check for whatever reason (based on each individual bank's policies), then your friend can also take the check to YOUR bank (the bank the check is drawn on) and have the check 'turned into' a Cashier's Check (which is considered "good funds" [like cash] ). Once the friend has the Cashier's Check, they can take the check to their bank and cash it (or deposit it - no hold on Cashier's Checks; at least not in my experience).

I worked in a bank for two years, up until mid-Sept 2003.

Man, these people don't know what they are talking about. ANYONE can cash a check made out to cash. It is easier for them to cash it at your bank, since they can cash it there immediately, without having to deal with a possible "hold" until it clears.

No. The only person that can cash a check made out to CASH would be you, writing a check out of your own bank account to yourself for withdrawal purposes. If your neighbor Suzie Creamcheese is going to cash a check, that you give her.... it needs to be made out to her. She'll need to deposit and then the individual banking rules would apply. Some banks will give you immediate access to only a portion of what you deposit until the check can be verified. This is all very complicated and varies by State, and by bank. There is not a clean cut answer, but .. NO.. the check you give to the recipient cannot be made out to CASH.

If you write it out for cash, you must sign the back of the check. Also, the receiver will sign the back under your name, and it can be cashed at their bank.............if..........they have enough money in their account to cover the check. Otherwise, the answer is no.

Yes usually - as long as the casher has enough funds to cover the check in their own account. Might be easier at your bank. why cash though? Make the check out to the casher to avoid most problems in cashing it.
