I would like to pierce the rim of my ear, should I have it done with a needle or is a gun okay to use?

Needle is much better. A needle is designed to go through your ear, the back of an earring is not.? Needles are also fully sterilized, and disposable, all piercing tools are sterilized in an autoclave ( just like in a hospital). A piercing gun is wiped down with alcohol. Alcohol does not sterilize anything.
Stud Guns also can malfunction leaving the stud bent and lodged in your ear, this is painful to remove and can cause abnormal scar tissue to form.
Stud guns also pierce with a standard size jewelry that does not allow for much swelling. (cartilage is known to swell quite a bit)

Some people swell over the backing of their stud and this can be painful to remove.
Because of the 'butterfly' backing of the stud it is easy for dirt and bacteria to get trapped inside, this can cause infection.

In some areas cartilage piercings are banned with the gun because the gun is known to damage them.

I assume you mean where it is cartilage. Either way, guns are old technology, but if its in the cartilage, then be sure to have it done with a needle. I got mine pierced with a gun about 12-13 years ago, and I still remember how bad it hurt for a long time. I think the gun cause it to bruise the cartilage. I would be sleeping, and roll over...man I would near fly up, and it would ache, this lasted a good 6 months.

Needle is way better. There's less trauma with a needle than a gun. All mine with needles have healed better than those with a gun. I have 9 piercings in various spots on my ears. The only one that ever gave me any issues was one done with a gun.
