Part 1:

I imagine that more than one word might fit the bill, but my answer is: are becomes area.

Part #2:

1-fity-cent piece, 1-quarter, 4-dimes, and 4-pennies for a total of $1.19. The reasoning used to determine this configuration is that I could never have enough any coins to create an amount equivalent to another coin. In order to maximize the number of coins, I chose dimes over nickels as it takes more than 4 dimes to reach the equivalent amount of two quarters. Two nickels, on the other hand, is the equivalent of one dime. Four pennies works out great, as that stops one penny short of the equivalent of a nickel. No combination of those coins equals one dollar.

=============

If you choose to eliminate the fifty-cent piece as part of this exercise, increasing the amount of quarters to 3 gives the same results.
[ 3-quarters, 1-dime, 1-nickel, 4-pennies ]

Keep having fun!

I dunno, the 1st one but I'm guessing $1.69 for the second. I think you can have 75 cents worth of quarters, 90 cents worth of dimes and 4 pennies and still not be able to make exact change for a dollar.

Ok, then is it $1.19, one quarter, 9 dimes and 4 pennies.

Making me think on a Sunday? Shame shame shame.

First guess: How about, Alone. Alone has 1 syllable, if you add ER, it becomes, A Loner, as in, "he's a loner." like some gothic guy, wait, thats 2 syllables, or is it 3? Damn, i'm confused.

Second guess: 99 cents, duh.
