I need to know how safe metformin is. My Health care professional said that if she put me on it, we would only have t be concerned about the first six hours.

Metformin is a drug that is prescribed to individuals with Type II Diabetes, to help them control their blood sugar levels. It has been used in Europe for the past 25 years, but has only been available in the United States and Canada since 1995. Because it has not been on the market for a very long period of time, physicians have been somewhat reluctant to prescribe it, as the clinical trials are not extensive. It has not been shown to cause any serious side effects in those patients who have taken the drug, and is deemed to be safe. The concern your health care provider has indicated to you are more on the level of your body's reaction to the new drug, and how you will tolerate how the drug works.

Metformin works in 3 ways:
1- it decreases the absorption of carbohydrates through the intestines;
2-reduces the production of glucose by the liver;
3- increases the sensitivity of the muscle cells to insulin.
