Bank says they do "soft" inquiry. what does that mean?

Yes there may be an inquiry, but not all inquiries will affect your credit score. The type of inquiries that are made opening a bank or savings account won't "ding" your credit rating .. but applying for a credit card or other loan, will.

Some credit reports do show savings accounts which in some cases works in your favor.

It won't hurt your credit.

I have had an emigrant direct account for about a year now with no problems.
