You mentioned on top? Top where? It depends. If the "black and stuff" you mentioned is near the corners where the toenail meets your skin, it could be dirt. Or, on top of the toenail generally means a nasty nail fungus. However, you are in luck. More attention from the healthcare community has improved most nail fungus medications. One in particular, Lamicil tablet would probably work well for you. You will need to schedule an appointment with your healthcare provider and ask for a prescription for Lamicil. Also, your provider will need to conduct a thorough examination of your toenails, feet, and probably perform a routine physical. There are many reasons for thick, yellow, black, dirty, and discolored toenails. Good luck, and I hope it clears up real soon.

What do you mean at the tops of them? Does the black stuff have an offensive odor? Maybe it's a type of foot fungus or nail fungus. See your doc.

Do you wear dark socks??? If new, they can leave dye on nails if your feet sweat, and the dye stays very well. Use chlorox on them and see if the dark changes.
